California Voter Foundation Receives $157,000 Grant from Craig Newmark Philanthropies

Grant to Establish a U.S. Election Officials’ Support Network

The California Voter Foundation (CVF) announced today it is beginning a new project to develop a nonpartisan, nationwide collaborative initiative of election community leaders to work together to support and defend U.S. election officials and election administration. The project is supported by a $157,000 grant awarded to CVF from Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

“Election officials are the frontline workers of democracy, and they are under attack across the country,” said CVF president and founder Kim Alexander. “We are grateful to Craig Newmark Philanthropies for support at this critical time in U.S. elections.”

This edition of CVF-News highlights our new report addressing harassment of election officials and several other related reports and developments that have emerged in the two weeks since our report came out. We deeply appreciate the commitment displayed to shedding light on the threats received by election officials. And we are especially thankful to Craig Newmark Philanthropies whose support made CVF's report possible. 

Working on this project has been one of the most challenging and heartbreaking experiences of my career. It has been traumatizing to learn of the pain and suffering so many election officials are enduring in the wake of the 2020 election; I cannot imagine how difficult this is for those who are directly experiencing it.

New CVF Report Sheds Light on Harassment of U.S. Election Officials

Funding, education and legal safeguards are needed to protect democracy’s frontline workers

CVF harassment reportSacramento, CA -- A new California Voter Foundation report sheds light on the threats and attacks U.S. election officials have endured in the wake of the 2020 election.

“Documenting and Addressing Harassment of Election Officials” features findings gathered through interviews with eleven election officials from six states along with eight of the nation’s leading election experts.

The report finds that ten of the eleven officials interviewed endured death threats, other threats or abusive language. The report is available online at www.calvoter.org/harassment.

For starters, we’re going to have a statewide election later this year to ask California voters whether Governor Gavin Newsom should remain in office or not. It has been a quite a year so far. Insurrectionists attempted to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. This unprecedented attack on the U.S. election process was not successful, and Joe Biden was inaugurated as the new President while California's former U.S. Senator Kamala Harris was sworn in as the new Vice President.

Gov. Gavin Newsom filled this vacancy by appointing California's former Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, to serve as California's U.S. Senator and Dr. Shirley Weber to serve as California's new Secretary of State. Secretary Weber, who previously served in the State Legislature representing San Diego, was sworn in on Jan. 29th and is California's first Black Secretary of State.

Sacramento, CA -- Yesterday California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his choiceto replace Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to represent Californians in the U.S. Senate is Alex Padilla, California’s current Secretary of State.

Gov. Newsom’s pick for California’s next Secretary of State is Dr. Shirley Weber, a California Assemblymember representing the San Diego area.

“The California Voter Foundation applauds these choices," said Kim Alexander, CVF's president and founder. "We hope Secretary Padilla brings his passion for making elections more inclusive and secure to the U.S. Senate and continues advocating for federal funding to support local election administration and stronger U.S. election security standards.”

Election Wrap-up: A look back, a look ahead

The 2020 election wrapped up with an astounding 80.7 percent turnout of California's registered voters!

Last Friday, Secretary of State Alex Padilla certified the results: nearly 17.8 million Californians cast ballots in the 2020 Presidential Election, representing 71 percent of the state's eligible voters. As noted in John Myers' LA Times story, this was the highest turnout California has seen since 1952.
